Now is the time for residential, rooftop solar. Solar power is the fastest growing source of clean energy across the country, especially in California, where there are around 200,000 installed systems already, according to Greentech Media. The California Independent System Operator Corporation (ISO), the state's energy grid operator, recently approved new regulations that lets private companies buy power from commercial and residential solar panel system owners to then sell energy on the power wholesale market, according to Clean Technica.
Previously, residential solar owners were unable to have an active role in wholesale markets. However, this new rule could benefit solar providers through paving the way for another means of profit aside from net metering. Clean Energy Authority reports that it also is a vital first move towards broadening access for distributed storage and solar in the marketplace.
Residential solar is on the rise across the state, as Bloomberg New Energy Finance reports that residential solar panel installations has increased by 50 percent in 2014, which soared above utility-scale solar panel adoption, which showed a 15 percent growth.
"The decision, which also allows wholesalers to buy and bundle stored energy from batteries and electric vehicles, means people who invest in rooftop solar will have options and will be able to get a return on their investment even as utilities work to diminish net metering and other benefits paid to solar customers," Clean Energy Authority writes.
