If California was its own country it would now rank sixth in the world in solar generation, according to the latest U.S. Solar Market Insight Report. The report, commissioned by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), lists California's solar capacity as higher than countries such as France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Australia.
California became the first U.S. state to reach 10,000 MW of solar capacity this summer, after installing more than 700 MW of solar energy last quarter. With a total capacity of 10,649 MW, California solar panels now harness enough energy to power almost 2.6 million homes, a number that is only going to keep climbing. According to recent report by the California Energy Commission, more than a quarter of all new homes being built in Southern California are being constructed with solar energy technology.
These recent milestones in California are the result of more than a decade of commitment that has seen California install 10 times the solar capacity than the entire nation had in 2007. Solar's meteoric growth in the state is due in large part to solar rebates and policies such as the Solar Investment Tax Credit, Renewable Portfolio Standards and Net Energy Metering.
"When it comes to creating clean energy jobs and protecting the environment, California is showing the world how to get the job done," said Rhone Resch, SEIA president and CEO. "We congratulate Gov. Brown, his administration, legislative leaders and the people of California for being at the forefront of America's efforts to create a vibrant and growing clean energy economy."
