Solar jobs are currently at an all-time high. In the Solar Foundation recently released results from its sixth annual solar industry census of 19,000 businesses across the country, it found that there were around 209,000 solar company employees last year, far higher than 174,000 in 2014.
This 20 percent growth within the solar industry is due to increased demand spurred by lowering panel costs and increases in federal tax credits, Joe Ryan at Bloomberg Business reports.
"The industry's growth comes as solar becomes more affordable," Ryan wrote. "The cost of an average system has declined 67 percent since 2010 ... A federal tax credit, meanwhile, reimburses developers 30 percent of the cost of solar farms. That program had been set to expire at the end of this year and was extended in December by Congress through the end of 2021."
"The solar industry is booming."
At 12 times more growth than the entire nation's 1.7 percent employment growth from last year, this data shows that the solar industry is booming, especially in environmentally-conscious states like California.
"California is home to 76,000 solar jobs, or more than 1/3 of the total. And while more detailed data by state, county and legislative district will be released in February, deep in the report is some revealing data about the different labor intensity of residential versus utility-scale PV," PV Magazine's Christian Roselund wrote. "While utility-scale solar is still the largest market segment by MW installed, only 22 percent of U.S. solar jobs are in utility-scale solar, whereas 63 percent of workers are in the residential segment."
